In the Yin style of yoga, poses are held for several minutes at a time in order to the stretch the connective tissue around the joints. A typical Hatha or Flow yoga class targets the superficial or muscular tissues of the body. Yin yoga allows more time to stretch beyond the superficial muscles so that the connective tissues of the hips, pelvis and the lower spine are then stretched. In the Yin class students are encouraged not to strain or force a stretch of the muscle, instead we breathe deeply and allow the body to open and release in its own time.
